Uttar Pradesh Tops in Dalit Harassment Cases According to Home Ministry Response
Delhi: Member of Parliament Kunwar Danish Ali raised a crucial question on the increasing incidents of harassment faced by Dalits in the country, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. The question was directed to the Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ajay Kumar Mishra, during a session held on December 19, 2023.
Question Posed by MP Danish Ali:
(a) Has there been an increase in the number of incidents related to rape and harassment of Dalits in the country, especially in Uttar Pradesh, in the last few years?
(b) If so, what is the number of such incidents during the last five years, the total number of reported cases, and the number of cases in which action has been taken?
Minister of State Ajay Kumar Mishra’s Response:
In his response, Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra referred to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which compiles statistical data on crimes reported by States/UTs. The latest published report by NCRB pertains to the year 2022. The State/UT-wise details of Cases Registered (CR), Cases Charge-sheeted (CCS), and Persons Arrested (PAR) under Crimes against Scheduled Castes (SCs) during the years 2018-2022 were provided.
Uttar Pradesh, unfortunately, topped the list with the highest number of Dalit harassment cases in 2022:
Cases Registered (CR): 15,368
Cases Charge-sheeted (CCS): 12,996
Persons Arrested (PAR): 23,212
Following Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan ranked second:
Cases Registered (CR): 8,752
Cases Charge-sheeted (CCS): 4,031
Persons Arrested (PAR): 7,701
Madhya Pradesh secured the third position:
Cases Registered (CR): 7,733
Cases Charge-sheeted (CCS): 7,588
Persons Arrested (PAR): 6,735
