UP man gets life term for raping Dalit minor
MUZAFFARNAGAR: A 28-year-old man on Tuesday was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in Muzaffarnagar for kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old Dalit girl on the pretext of marrying her.
A fine of Rs 51,000 was also slapped on him by the additional district judge/special judge (Pocso Act) hearing the case.
The incident occurred in the Jansath region of the district in May 2013. According to police sources, the accused and the girl lived in the same locality, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Jansath police station.
As per a complaint filed by the girl’s brother, the accused allegedly “lured” her to another district in Punjab on May 27, 2013, after promising to marry her. The girl also backed these allegations in her statement in court.
SSP Vineet Jaiswal told TOI, “Following the complaint, teams were dispatched to find the girl and the accused. The accused was arrested months later along with the girl. Police and prosecution presented strong evidence and witnesses before the court to secure a conviction.”
The accused was charged under sections 363 (punishment for kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping, abducting), and 376 (rape) of Indian Penal Code, along with the SC/ST Act,” said additional district government counsel Dinesh Sharma.
