UP: 27 years later, caste-Hindu man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for raping Dalit woman
A special court in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi on Friday sentenced a man named Awadhesh Shukla to 10 years of imprisonment for raping a Dalit woman in a case dating back 27 years.
Special Judge (SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act) Shirin Zaidi found Awadhesh Shukla guilty, fined him Rs 6,000, and stated he could face additional imprisonment if the fine is not paid, PTI news agency reported.
Additional district government counsel Pankaj Sonkar said the survivor had filed a police complaint on the incident on March 11, 1997, accusing Shukla of dragging her into a field, raping her and threatening to kill her
A case under sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC and provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered at the Saini police station.
