Transgender people want pension, equal rights
Patna: The LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex) community held a ‘Pride Parade’ in the city on Friday to press for the demand of monthly pension for its members and equal rights among other issues.
Organized by ‘Dostana Safar’, the Pride Parade emphasized on continued challenges faced by the transgender community regarding denial of their rights to avail surrogacy benefits and the absence of legal provisions for same-sex marriage among the transgender community.
Addressing the gathering, LGBTQI+ activist Reshma Prasad called upon chief minister Nitish Kumar to take decisive action and urged him to allow pension as part of a comprehensive social security scheme. “Such measures would provide a much-needed lifeline to the transgender community,” she said.
“Now the government is accepting and recognizing our rights but there’s a need to educate everyone by creating awareness on gender sensitivity and recognizing our right to live on an equal basis,“ said Chandrashekhar, a pharmacist by profession.
“We are considered a taboo and are laughed upon. But they don’t understand the courage that goes within to stand up for our rights and I extend my full support to the transgender community to educate and economically uplift ourselves to lead a better life,” a participant said.
