Transgender judge: Transgender teacher sat on the seat of judge in Lok Court
Transgender teacher Atri Kar has taken the seat of the fourth National People’s Court judge in Hooghly. Atri Kar, a resident of Triveni, is a teacher at Ramnagar Primary School in Kuntighat, Hooghly. He is happy to have the honor of being a judge in the People’s Court. A total of 5333 cases were settled in this Lok Court held at Hooghly District Court on Saturday.
A Lok Adalat was organized there yesterday on the initiative of Chunchura Division Legal Services Association. Several cases including criminal, check bounce, labor disputes, electricity bill arrears, matrimonial cases, car accidents are settled there. A total of five benches sit. Judges from High Court judges to lawyers and social workers like Atri Kar get a place there.
On receiving the honor of the judge, Atri said, “Even after the Supreme Court’s judgment in 2014, efforts were not made to bring forward the people of the third gender.” State Legal Service Authority, District Legal Service Authority are doing them. I applaud their initiative. The judges of the High Court are sitting next to us, giving respect. It is a great honor.
Incidentally, Atri Kar is also a school teacher involved in social service activities. He said, “We make judgments all our lives. And people are a little more judgmental towards us. However, excluding the mental, I will only judge. That day, Sheikh Barkatullah, a resident of Dabra village in Pandua, took a loan of one lakh rupees from the bank for farming. However, he could not repay the loan due to crop failure. That case was also settled on Saturday. Also many old cases are settled.
