Transgender Judge of India: India’s first transgender judge Joyita Mondal has stressed on the need for reservation in government jobs for members of her community, saying their entry into sectors such as the police force and railways will change society’s attitude towards them and lead to a better life. It will help in their progress. Mandal said that his community also needs adequate number of shelter homes in the country and the government should start a scheme in this regard.
“It is very important to give reservation in government jobs to the transgender community. If I don’t have a job, who will feed me?” Mandal said that if transgender persons join the police force and railways on the basis of reservation, it will not only help the members of the community to move ahead in life, but also change the attitude of the society towards them.
He said that the officers should be more sensitive towards the members of their community and the problems faced by them. Mondal was appointed a judge of the Lok Adalat of Islampur in West Bengal in 2017, becoming the first person from her community to hold such a post in the country.
