Transgender fest on March 16 & 17
T’puram: An arts festival for the transgender community ‘Varnappakittu’ will be held at Nishagandhi auditorium, Kanakakunnu, on March 16 and 17. The festival is being organised by the state social justice department as part of the govt policy to improve the community members’ acceptability in society and encourage their artistic skills. This is the fourth edition of the festival.
The festival will also host programmes of Ananyam, a cultural organisation set up for the promotion of artistic talent and enhancement of their self-esteem.
A procession in connection with the festival will commence from the University College at 4pm on March 16, and will conclude at the Nishagandhi auditorium. Social justice minister R Bindu will inaugurate the festival and the Ananyam cultural organisation. The programme will start at 11am on March 17. The next festival will emulate the school youth festival model and it will be organised in Kozhikode in Aug-Sept.
As part of the ‘pride’ project, implemented by the department of social justice in collaboration with the Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission, a special training programme for transgender individuals will be launched, said the minister. The initiative aims to provide opportunities in the knowledge employment sector through a training programme called certificate in airport operation. TNN
