Muslims political power in India: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi recently resigned from the cabinet of Modi government. Now there is no Muslim minister in Modi government. Nor is there any Muslim MP in the Lok Sabha. This is when Muslims constitute 16 percent of the population in the country. Not only the central government. Rather, there is not even a single Muslim minister in the governments of 16 states of the country.
Number of Muslim MPs in BJP
At present there is no Muslim MP from BJP side in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In 2014, 7 and in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP gave tickets to 6 Muslims. But not a single one reached Parliament by winning. The BJP has 91 seats out of the total 245 seats in the Rajya Sabha, but the party has not sent a single Muslim leader to the Rajya Sabha from its quota. BJP does not have a single Muslim MLA in 31 states and union territories of the country.
Before talking about the political power of Muslims in the governments of the states, before that, at the national level, ie in the Lok Sabha, after independence, how many Muslim MPs were there in the year.
Year 1952- Muslim population in the country was 10 percent. And 4 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha were Muslims.
Year 1957 – 10 percent of the population but the representation of MPs increased from 4 to 5 percent
Year 1962 – 11 percent of the Muslim population, 5 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 1967 – 11 percent of the Muslim population, 6 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 1971 – 11 percent of the Muslim population, 6 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 1977 – 11 percent of the Muslim population, 6 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 1980 – 11 percent of the Muslim population, 9 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 1984 – 11 percent of the Muslim population, 8 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 1989 – 11 percent of the Muslim population, 6 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 1991 – 12 percent Muslim population, 5 percent MPs in Lok Sabha.
Year 1996 – 12 percent of the Muslim population, 5 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 1998 – 12 percent Muslim population, 5 percent MPs in Lok Sabha.
Year 1999 – 12 percent of the Muslim population, 6 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 2004 – 13 percent of the Muslim population, 7 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 2009- Muslim population 13 percent, Lok Sabha 5 percent MPs.
Year 2014 – 14 percent of the Muslim population, 4 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Year 2019 – 15 percent of the Muslim population, 4.9 percent of the MPs in the Lok Sabha.
In the year 1980, the Muslim population was 11 percent, then the representation of Muslims in the Lok Sabha was 9 percent. Today the population has crossed 15 per cent but the representation has come down to 4.9 per cent.
Now if we talk about the legislatures of Muslim majority states, then there too the representation of Muslims is not in the average of the population. A state like Rajasthan where there is 8 percent Muslim population. But there are only 3 percent Muslim MLAs in the assembly. In Assam, the state with the largest Muslim population, the number of Muslim MLAs is only 19 percent of the total MLAs.
State wise BJP Muslim MLAs
BJP does not have a single Muslim MLA in 31 states and union territories of the country. Talking about the assembly elections held after 2019, BJP did not give ticket to a single Muslim in the assembly elections held in Arunachal Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In the West Bengal assembly elections, 6 Muslims were given tickets. Apart from this, tickets were given to 9 in Assam, 3 in Haryana, 1-1 Muslim in Manipur and Kerala.
