New Delhi: The Supreme Court has criticized the trend of increasing bulldozer action on the houses or properties of criminals. The court called it a case of ‘bulldozer justice’. The Supreme Court announced that it would issue guidelines to resolve this issue. Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has targeted the government over the Supreme Court comment. He said that this country will be run by the Constitution, not by the whip of power. Rahul Gandhi has appealed to the Supreme Court to issue guidelines in this matter soon.
Rahul Gandhi made this appeal to the Supreme Court
Rahul Gandhi posted on X and wrote, ‘The Supreme Court’s comment on BJP’s unconstitutional and unjust ‘bulldozer policy’ is welcome. The anti-constitutional face of the BJP, which has crushed humanity and justice under the bulldozer, has now been exposed in front of the country. The bulldozer, which has become a symbol of unbridled power, has constantly challenged the law with arrogance by crushing civil rights. Often the households of the Bahujans and the poor come under the wheels of the bulldozer, which is being run with the intention of establishing the ‘rule of fear’ under the guise of ‘instant justice’.’
He further said, ‘We expect that the Supreme Court will issue clear guidelines on this very sensitive issue and protect the citizens from this anti-democracy campaign of the BJP governments. The country will be run by Baba Saheb’s Constitution, not by the whip of power.’
Hearing in court on bulldozer action
It is worth noting that on Monday, the Supreme Court talked about issuing guidelines on bulldozer culture. The court also accepted and appreciated the position adopted by Uttar Pradesh, which said that demolition can be done only when the structure is considered illegal. The court said in its order that we propose to make some guidelines on this matter for the whole of India so that the concerns raised about it can be taken care of. We appreciate the stand taken by the state of Uttar Pradesh. The lawyers of all the parties can give suggestions regarding this so that the court can prepare a guideline regarding this which can be implemented everywhere in India.
Hearing on two petitions in the Supreme Court
The court was hearing two petitions regarding the demolition allegedly done without any notice and as an “act of revenge”. Both these petitions were filed before the court by Rashid Khan of Rajasthan and Mohammad Hussain of Madhya Pradesh. Khan, a 60-year-old auto-rickshaw driver from Udaipur, claimed that his house was demolished by the Udaipur district administration on August 17, 2024. This action was taken after communal violence in Udaipur, during which many vehicles were set on fire and markets were closed.
