Karur: Revenue officials sealed the Kaliyamman temple in Veernapatti village in Karur district of Tamil Nadu where caste Hindus denied entry to members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community and allegedly threw them out of the temple.
A young Dalit man was pushed out of the temple by members of the dominant community after he came in to offer prayers during a festival on Thursday.
The festival was celebrated by residents of eight villages surrounding the temple. However, 80 Dalit families in Veeranampatti were denied entry into the temple. Around 200 families belong to a Most Backward Caste (MBC) community and reside in the same village.
As tensions prevailed in the village over the issue, government officials led by DRO Muniraj reached the spot and held talks. However, the caste Hindus were firm on their decision not to let Dalits inside the temple.
Notably, this is the second such incident reported in the state within a week.
