Stir continues over Dalit cop’s suicide
Jaipur: The family of a 50-year-old Dalit head constable who committed suicide after allegedly being harassed by his seniors continued their protest for the fourth day outside SMS Hospital mortuary. Meena Devi and Tanuj, the wife and son of deceased Babu Lal Bairwa, released a video in which Meena Devi stated that they will take action if anyone conducts a post-mortem without her and her son’s consent.
Bairwa’s family and Dalit organisations have been demanding the arrest of three police officials and the journalist mentioned by the deceased in his suicide letter, along with a job for a family member. Bairwa hanged himself inside the Mukundpura outpost of Bhankrota police station on last Thursday, leaving behind a six-page handwritten suicide note in which he blamed three police officials and a journalist for driving him to take the extreme step.
His son filed an FIR on Friday against additional superintendent of police Jagdish Vyas, assistant commissioner of police (Sadar) Anil Kumar Sharma, sub-inspector (Murlipura) Ashutosh Singh, and journalist Kamal Degda for abetment of suicide.
Jaipur police said the investigation has been handed over to a senior police official and that they are examining the contents of the suicide letter left by the head constable.
Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully met the protesting family members on Sunday. He said the constable chose the path of death due to harassment by senior police officers and another individual, and demanded a CBI inquirty in the matter.
