Spend 35% of MLALAD funds on Dalits: RLD chief
MUZAFFARNAGAR: Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary on Tuesday asked all eight of his party’s MLAs to use 35% of the MLA local area development (MLALAD) funds for the “upliftment of the Dalit community”.
“They are the most downtrodden and have difficulty accessing welfare schemes,” he said.
Notably, each UP MLA gets Rs 5 crore each year for developing his/her constituency. The step was seen by some as an effort to woo the community into the RLD fold before the 2024 polls.
In a letter addressed to Rajpal Balyan, president of Vidhan Mandal and MLA from the Budhana constituency in Muzaffarnagar, Jayant stated, “We believe that unless benefits of government schemes reach the weaker and deprived sections of society, major social reforms are not possible. For this purpose…more than 35% of the regional development funds of MLAs of our party will be spent for the welfare of the scheduled castes in your area.” Talking about the “Nyaya Yatra” conducted by RLD a few months ago, Chaudhry added, “RLD witnessed the pathetic conditions of the scheduled caste people’s villages and residential areas during the yatra, before the Vidhan Sabha elections. The party has continuously brought more and more people from the Bahujan samaj into the mainstream under the ‘Bahujan Uday Abhiyan’.”
Meanwhile, Balyan told TOI, “I have sent letters regarding the matter to the other seven MLAs of RLD. We will receive the first fund soon.” Parshant Kanojia, head of the SC/ST cell in RLD, told TOI, “During the Nyaya Yatra, we saw that areas, where those belonging to the scheduled caste were living, were devoid of basic facilities.”
