On January 17, 2016, a student Rohit Vemula committed suicide in Hyderabad. His suicide has remained a particularly political issue since then, as it was presented as an institutional discrimination and it was being said that because he was a Dalit, he was being tortured.
FIR was lodged against BJP leaders
Regarding this, it was said that Bharatiya Janata Party leaders had a hand in motivating him to commit suicide and an FIR was even registered against BJP MP Bandaru Dattatreya regarding this.
Whereas he had expressed concern by writing a letter to the then Human Resource Development Minister Smt. Smriti Irani over Ambedkar Student Association opposing the hanging of terrorist Yakub Menon. He had written that when ABVP’s Sushil Kumar opposed this, he was attacked and had to be admitted to the hospital.
Opposition continues to attack BJP
After this letter, when the administration took steps, the name of MP Bandaru Dattatreya was dragged into it by making those steps the basis for harassment etc. BJP leaders from Mayawati to Rahul Gandhi were attacking regarding this suicide of Rohit Vemula.
Vemula was not a Dalit
Regarding this case of 2016, Telangana Police has now said in one of its reports that he was not a Dalit and since he was hiding his real caste, he had committed suicide due to the fear of being exposed.
According to news portal The News Minute, Telangana Police filed this report in the High Court on Friday, May 3, 2024. This report has been uploaded on scribd website. Where a movement was being run to take advantage of Rohit Vemula’s suicide by calling him a Dalit. According to the report, the investigating officers were not able to investigate Rohit’s caste due to this reason.
Vemula belonged to this caste
When the investigating officer talked to Rohit’s father, it came to light that Rohit belonged to the Vemula Vaddera caste, which falls in the backward class. Rohit’s father had told the investigating officer that he and Rohit’s mother were married as per the family’s choice and both of them belong to the Vaddera caste, which falls in the backward class and not in the Scheduled Caste. The investigating officer also questioned the village sarpanch about Rohit’s caste, to which she also said that she knew the deceased’s family very well and they belonged to the Vaddera caste.
Fellowship allegation also revealed
An allegation was also made that Rohit Vemula was not getting the money for his fellowship. In response to this, it is written in the report that Rohit Vemula had passed CSIR-NET in the year 2012 and he had taken admission in Animal Science Department in July 2012 and he was paid Rs 4,99,200 from 1/7/2012 to 30/06. /2014.
Then he refused to proceed in Animal Science on 22 April 2013 and cancellation orders for this were also issued in November 2013. Thus he got more fellowship till 30 June 2014. After this, he again gave the CSIR/UGC examination in March 2014 and then took admission in PhD in July 2014.
As per the guidelines of the funding agency, the tenure of a PhD is 5 years, but since he had already taken the fellowship by 2014, his case was forwarded.
From the year 2012, the fellowship amount started being sent directly to the account, so the work of the university remains only to issue the continuity letter. Yet he received the fellowship from July 2, 2014 to July 1, 2015 and did not receive it thereafter. Yes, he received fellowship enhancement amount in November 2015. Which was Rs 54,000.
It has also been said in this report that the punishments which were being termed as harassment were imposed as per the rules of the university and in this the BJP MP has also been given a clean chit.
When the question of the reasons for suicide is raised in this report, the answer is to the letter of Rohith Vemula, which he had written before his death. According to that letter, he was very troubled and he had this problem since childhood. He writes that his birth was a big accident.
According to this police report, Rohit’s family had come to live in Uppal, Hyderabad from Guntur a month before his death. Therefore, financial constraints i.e. stoppage of fellowship may not be a problem, as he could have stayed with his family.
This report also states that in a letter written to the VC on December 18, 2015, he had asked for poison and rope for suicide. As far as family is concerned, it is revealed that her parents had separated long ago and her younger brother was engaged. It is written in the report that if we know more about the deceased, it comes to light that he was more involved in political issues than studies.
After that it is written, “Besides, the deceased himself was aware that he did not belong to the caste whose caste certificate his mother had given him. It is possible that he is afraid that if this truth comes out then his academic hard work of so many years will go in vain. Thus the deceased had so many issues that he committed suicide.
Rahul Gandhi created ruckus by calling him Dalit
While Lok Sabha elections are to be held in Telangana on May 13, ten days before that, this report from Congress ruled Telangana says a lot. It should be remembered that at that time Smriti Irani was the Human Resource Development Minister and that was the first term of Prime Minister Modi.
The ecosystem continued to create ruckus in this matter. People are now making Rahul Gandhi’s tweets viral. Recently, when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was taking out Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rohith Vemula’s mother joined him in Telangana.
The untimely demise of a youth of any country is a loss for that country, but it is even more unfortunate to make his untimely and inconvenient death a stepping stone for one’s politics and use it for one’s political gains. Whereas in the year 2017 also, an inquiry commission constituted by the Central Government had proved that the college administration had no role in the suicide of Rohith Vemula.
