Revanth moots all-party team to secure 42% BC reservation amendment

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy has announced his readiness to lead an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking a constitutional amendment in Parliament for the 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, employment, and local bodies in Telangana.
He urged Union ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay and BJP MLAs Payal Shankar and Alleti Maheshwar Reddy to leverage their influence to secure an appointment with PM Modi. The CM stressed that all political parties should unite to secure constitutional protection for the enhanced BC reservations by passing the amendment during the ongoing Parliament session.
Revanth said that Congress leaders, including Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Mahesh Kumar Goud, would meet Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to discuss the issue. He directed the chief secretary to write a letter seeking the PM’s appointment, with a copy sent to Telangana BJP leaders.
“The Telangana govt is committed to providing 42% reservations to BCs, as per the Kamareddy declaration by Congress. Our state is the first in the country to conduct a socio-economic caste survey, which was 100% genuine,” Revanth said in the assembly on Monday.
He explained that the bill for 42% BC reservations was introduced after withdrawing the earlier bill for 37% reservations sent to the President in 2017 during the previous BRS govt, to avoid legal and technical issues.
Revanth also declared Feb 4 as ‘social justice day,’ marking the day the govt adopted a resolution for the BC quota enhancement in the state assembly.
The CM reiterated that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had promised to enhance BC reservations to 42% if Congress came to power. Following this, the Telangana govt announced the caste census on Feb 4, he recalled.
He thanked all parties for supporting the BC cause, irrespective of affiliation, and expressed gratitude to those who participated in the caste survey. “We want to send a strong message that the entire assembly has united to increase the BC quota. Thanks to everyone for cooperating with the govt on this historic moment,” he said.
Outlining the efforts made by the Congress govt, Revanth highlighted the formation of a cabinet sub-committee and a one-man commission, followed by cabinet approval and acceptance by the assembly.
