Rohit Mishra, Lucknow: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had said during the proceedings of the House just a few days ago that India Alliance will pass the proposal of caste reservation in this House itself. Not only this, after the statement of former Union Minister Anurag Thakur, Rahul had once again said that he is not going to back down from this issue and he will continue to fight for the rights of the deprived. UP Congress has now taken the responsibility of taking forward this attitude of Rahul Gandhi. UP Congress has decided that it will garner support in favor of caste census. Not only this, the party is also going to run an awareness campaign from 9 to 11 August.
Even during the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi was continuously advocating caste census. He had raised the issue of caste census from every election platform. Now that the elections are over, the Congress is still moving forward with this issue. Recently, the Congress also celebrated National Participation Day on 26 July and demanded to conduct caste census and abolish the 50 percent barrier on the reservation limit. The intention of the Congress is now to bring the backward class voters to its side by taking this caste census issue forward. If Congress sources are to be believed, signature campaigns and big conferences will also be organized on this subject in the coming time. Congress sees future in backward and Dalit classes
After getting six seats from UP in the Lok Sabha elections, Congress is now eyeing the 2027 assembly elections. Due to alliance with SP in the Lok Sabha elections, backward classes came to Congress and in the name of saving reservation, Congress was able to perform better in UP by bringing Dalit voters together. Now it is seeing its future in saving the voters of this section. Congress believes that if Dalit and backward voters come to it, it will be important in strengthening Congress’s foothold in UP politics. Congress was last in power in UP in the year 1989. Since then, its support base in UP kept shrinking.
