Rahul Gandhi Defamation Case: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has suffered a setback in the Modi surname case. A Surat court on Thursday (April 20) dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case for his remarks on the surname Modi. On this, the Congress has said that the judgment will be challenged soon.
Senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that he is sure that the High Court or the Supreme Court will correct the mistake made by the Surat sessions court. He said that in the second part of the judgment, it was said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was defamed, but he is not a party to it. PM Modi never even complained about this.
‘No one complained’
Singhvi said that I am a leader of all India level, so will you give a sentence of two years or discuss. Is it wrong or not. If I abuse you, you will complain, won’t you? Out of the three names that he (Rahul Gandhi) took, no one has complained.
PM Modi mentioned
Describing the decision as unfortunate, Singhvi said that it is a violation of the basic principles of justice. Rahul Gandhi’s statement was misrepresented. He said that the OBC class has understood that PM Modi is trying to capitalize on his name. It is having the opposite effect.
Singhvi further said that Rahul Gandhi’s voice will not stop. They speak their mind in the public court. He has neither said wrong nor will say so. There will be no effect of intimidation on us.
What is the matter?
Rahul Gandhi became an MP from Wayanad in Kerala in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. On March 23 this year, a Surat court convicted him in a criminal defamation case filed by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi and sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment. A day later, he was disqualified from the membership of the Lok Sabha.
Explain that the lower court had sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison, convicting him for his remark made at an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka during 2019, “How can all thieves have Modi surname”.
