Pro-Dalit group members arrested for trying to throw beef at BJP Coimbatore office
Pro-Dalit group Aadmi Thamizhar Peravai members were arrested for attempting to throw beef at the BJP office in Coimbatore. The protest came after a BJP functionary allegedly harassed a woman to remove her stall selling beef from near a temple, the video of which was widely circulated online.
Members of Aadmi Thamizhar Peravai, a pro-Dalit organisation, were arrested on Monday for attempting to throw beef at the BJP office in Coimbatore as a form of protest.
The incident was sparked by BJP leader Subramaniam, who was caught on camera allegedly harassing a couple running a beef stall near a temple. Subramaniam reportedly demanded the stall be removed, claiming it violated village rules. The woman refused, pointing out that stalls selling chicken and fish were operating in the same area.
Her argument and the confrontation gained traction on social media, leading to widespread criticism of Subramaniam’s actions. A case has since been filed against him by the Tamil Nadu police. Following this, around 200 people from the village blocked the road leading to Maniyakarampalayam in protest against the police action. The protesters claimed that the cart was located very close to a school and a temple.
In response, several organisations rallied in support of the woman. Members of Aadmi Thamizhar Peravai planned to stage their protest by throwing beef at the BJP office. However, they were intercepted by the police about 100 meters from the office and taken into custody. Visuals from the site of the protest show protestors stomping on posters with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s pictures on them.
