Pocso court acquits Dalit RTI activist after 8-year ordeal
Agra: A special Pocso court in Etah has acquitted RTI activist Sunil Kumar of all charges, including molestation and attempted rape, after eight years of what he called his life’s “biggest ordeal”, reports Deepak Lavania. The 37-year-old activist, a Dalit, was allegedly framed for a video on cops collecting money from cattle smugglers. The court also directed the initiation of proceedings against the complainant.
On June 23, 2016, a 16-year-old girl filed a complaint against Kumar, a resident of Mohalla Nehru Nagar in Jaithra, alleging molestation and attempted rape. The then Jaithra SHO, Kailash Chandra Dubey, subsequently arrested Kumar and sent him to jail two days later. After being released on bail on July 16, 2016, Kumar filed a plea with National Human Rights Commission. Before he was implicated in a false case, Kumar had conducted a sting operation that showed cops collecting money from vehicles smuggling cattle. The video was widely circulated.
