Creepy crawlies in food, no cleaning staff, lack of sanitation facilities are some of the major problems plaguing residents of Government Science College Boys Hostel Poor sanitation facilities, low-quality food, and water leakage are just a few of the problems that the students living in government-run hostels in Bengaluru are facing. Recently, the students from Government Science College Boys’ Hostel located near Trinity Metro Station in Bengaluru highlighted their experiences of living in the hostel.
The hostel designated for the students belonging to Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe studying in Nrupathunga University is managed by the Department of Social Welfare and has been lying in a state of neglect
Ajay, a student living in the hostel, told Bangalore Mirror that one of the major issues faced by the students is the lack of sanitation facilities.
“For a long time, no one has been cleaning the hostel and it has become filthy. There is no staff present for a very long time for cleaning the premises.
There are more than 360 students staying in the hostel currently and the place has been neglected by the authorities. There is a water leakage issue as well inside the restrooms,” he said.
The students say that the food being provided by the hostel management is also poor quality and unhealthy for consumption.
“A few times, there have been insects in the rice that is being served. We have complained to the warden but nothing has improved so far. Even the basic facilities are not there for us students in the hostel,” Ajay added.
The students even staged a protest against the poor management and lack of basic facilities at the hostel premises on Monday, December 12.
“The condition of the building is also very poor. Many doors and windows have loose bolts and hinges. Some students do not have beds and are sleeping with a mattress on the floor which has not even been cleaned for a long time… The hostel Wi-Fi has not been recharged for over three months now and the student’s studies are also getting hampered because of that,” said another student from the hostel.

“There is a security and sanitation issue as well. The BBMP has given permission to tobacco stalls to set up around the hostel and it has created a nuisance,” he added. The students also informed us that many computers have also been stolen from the premises due to the lack of security facilities.
Currently, the hostel’s study room has only seven computers for more than 300 students staying in the hostel.
Shrinivas Balli, Vice Chancellor of the Nrupathunga University said, “The hostel was handed over to the department of Social Welfare for management and hence, the university has nothing to do with it.”
When BM tried to reach out to the department of Social Welfare, they were not available for a comment on the situation.
