NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council has finalised a plan to create facilities at 79 more places for transgender people.
The toilets will be constructed by floating tenders and extending the existing facilities, officials said.
The initiative was taken after a high court’s directive to set up such facilities for social inclusion of the community.
“We did a survey of the entire Lutyens’ Delhi area and based on the availability of space, we identified 79 places where facilities for transgenders can be added,” an official said.
At present, there are 12 toilets in the NDMC area for transgender people of which 11 are functional. One is under construction. Some of the places where the toilets are located are in front of Shastri Bhawan, Copernicus Marg, Humayun Road, KG Marg, S J Hospital on Ring road, Sarojini Nagar Market and Khan Market. One toilet in the Inner Circle of Connaught Place is being made.
The NDMC expects to allocate the tender in a month.. The project will take at least nine months to finish.
NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay said the facilities will ensure that transgender people are not discriminated against.
“Though I am not aware of the exact numbers of toilets proposed to be constructed, one such facility is under construction in the Hanuman Mandir complex in CP. We are dedicated to creating facilities for all sections of society,” Upadhyay said.
In June 2021, the NDMC inaugurated the first such toilet block with a separate cubicle for transgenders near the Press Club of India.
There are 346 toilet complexes in the NDMC area. Of these, 36 are community toilet units, the remaining public toilets.
