MP: Echo of Dalit atrocities, last rites stopped at government crematorium, arrested
Incidents of atrocities on Dalits in Madhya Pradesh have kept the government awake. The opposition is strongly cornering the government on the issues coming up one after the other. Apart from action against 6 policemen in the case of brutal beating of a Dalit woman and her grandson at Katni GRP police station, the government is also being criticized for not allowing a Dalit family in Ratlam to cremate the dead woman at the government crematorium. One arrest has been made in this case.

Let us tell you, in the last 48 hours in Madhya Pradesh, there has been a lot of uproar over two incidents of atrocities on Dalits. After the video of brutal beating of a Dalit woman and her grandson at Katni GRP police station went viral, the Congress cornered the government. MP Congress President Jeetu Patwari on Thursday announced to sit on a fast unto death at Katni police station along with the victim’s family. Seeing the attitude of Patwari and Congress, the government had to take action against the accused policemen.
Jitu Patwari got up from the police station late Thursday evening when the suspension order of 6 policemen was shown to him.
Jitu Patwari, while ending his fast, said, ‘Congress has got success. FIR has been filed against the culprits. Initial action has been taken against the policemen. We will not leave this issue. We will go to court and get the guilty policemen punished severely.’
Patwari immediately warned the state government machinery and said, ‘The machinery and policemen should not work as BJP workers. Congress will not spare such officers-employees and policemen.’
Let us tell you here, a video related to Katni GRP police station went viral on Wednesday. After the video went viral, former Chief Minister Kamal Nath commented on it, which created a stir.
Nath said, ‘These are the conditions of atrocities on Dalits in Madhya Pradesh ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which claims to be the advocate of Dalits and tribals. The culmination of atrocities is happening.’ After Nath’s tweet, politics started. The government clarified. On the other hand, SRP Katni tweeted and said, ‘The viral video is 10 months old (October 2023). We are getting it investigated. The policemen seen in the video have been sent to the line.’
Actually in the viral video, the station in-charge and five subordinates were seen brutally beating a woman and her grandson. The woman and her grandson were brought to the police station to arrest Deepak Vanskar, the woman’s son, a monitored criminal and a reward of Rs 10,000 accused. Later both of them were beaten up badly.
Apart from Katni, the other case is of village Kumhari under Asavati outpost of Ringnod police station of Javra in Ratlam district. This matter was also revealed through social media.
The police got information through social media that a woman named Sugan Bai of Dalit community died. When the body was taken to the government crematorium of the village for the last rites, the village bullies did not allow the last rites to be performed. As soon as this information came to light, the police swung into action.
The Ringnod police station police team went to the village at night and communicated with the victim’s family. The victim’s family was brought to Ringnod police station. Family member Badrilal told the police that Sugan Bai died on 25 August 2024 due to illness. It was raining heavily that day. There was no tin shed in the crematorium of the society. There was a tin shed in the government crematorium. Nahusingh Rajput of the village refused to perform the last rites in the government crematorium.
On the report of Badrilal, Ringnod police station registered a case against the accused Nagusingh under section 301 BNS 3(1)(ZA)(A) SC-ST Act and arrested him.
