‘Madrasa Students becoming doctors, engineers’: AIUDF MLA accuses Assam CM of ‘spewing’ hate to make RSS happy
Speaking at an event in Delhi on Sunday, the Assam CM had said that ??as long as the word ‘madrasa’ existed, children would not be able to think about becoming doctors and engineers.
Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front lawmaker Rafiqul Islam today lashed out at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his recent comments on ‘madrasas’. Earlier on Sunday, the BJP leader had opined that the word “madrasa” should cease to exist while stressing the “general education” in schools for all.
“CM spews hate to make RSS happy. They can’t shut madrassa as the constitution gives us the right to propagate our religion. He must know students from madrassa are becoming doctors and engineers,” Islam countered today.
Speaking at an event in Delhi on Sunday, the Assam CM had said that as long as the word ‘madrasa’ existed, children would not be able to think about becoming doctors and engineers.
“If you tell them that they will not become doctors or engineers if they study in madrasas, they themselves will refuse to go. Teach the Quran to your children, but at home. Admitting children in madrasas is a violation of their human rights,” he said.
Asked about meritorious students in madrasas he further said that “all Muslims were Hindus” when one looked back at their past. “No one was born a Muslim (in India). Everyone was a Hindu in India. So, if a Muslim child is extremely meritorious, I will give partial credit to his Hindu past,” he contended.
Earlier this week AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi had also lashed out at Sarma, contending that the latter was “busy giving hate speech while people were dying in the state” due to floods. “While Sanghis were acting as British agents, Madrasas were at the forefront of the freedom movement,” he added in a tweet.
In 2020, the Assan government had opted to dissolve all government-run madrassas and convert them into general educational institutions. Following this, the Gauhati High Court upheld the Assam Repealing Act, 2020, under which all provincial (government-funded) madrassas in the state were to be converted into normal schools.
