Birth and education
K R Narayanan was born on 27 October 1920 in Uzhavoor village of Kottayam district of Kerala. He belonged to the Parvan caste. Which was considered untouchable at that time. Narayanan’s remarkable journey to the highest post began from this village. It is said that he was born on 04 February 1921, but due to not knowing his actual birth date, his date of birth was written as 27 October 1920 in the school. Which Narayanan later kept as official.
Narayanan studied in a missionary school about 8 km away from his home. He was a brilliant student. Due to which the royal family of Travancore gave him a scholarship to go to college. Narayanan completed his 12th from CMS College, Kottayam. Then he obtained an honors degree in English literature. After this, the way was paved for him to do scholarship-supported studies in the prestigious University of London. He completed his further studies from the London School of Economics and specialized in political science.
Start of Foreign Service
After returning to India in the year 1948, he met Pt. Nehru. During this time Nehru asked him to join the Indian Foreign Service. In 1949, he joined the Indian Foreign Service. Due to which he served as an ambassador in Tokyo, Rangoon, London, Canberra and Hanoi. Seeing Narayanan’s efficiency, he was appointed as India’s ambassador to Turkey and China.
Political career
His journey as the US ambassador from 1980 to 1984 was spectacular. Then in the year 1955, K R Narayanan was named as the best diplomat of the country by Pt. Nehru. He also worked as a secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and taught students as a professor at the Delhi School of Economics. Then after retirement in 1978, he became the Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
He participated in the election for the first time in the 1984 Lok Sabha elections. During this time he won from Ottapalam seat of Kerala. Narayanan participated in the general elections three times in a row on a Congress ticket and won. He was a Minister of State in the Rajiv Gandhi government. He held various ministerial positions in PM Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi governments.
First Dalit President
Let us tell you that in the year 1992, K R Narayanan was elected as the Vice President of India. Then in the year 1997, he was elected as the 10th President of the country. He is the first person from Kerala and the first Dalit to assume the post of President.
