Jharkhand: Uproar over the death of Dalit youth in police custody in Ramgarh, cremation took place after 53 hours.
Ranchi: Dalit youth Aniket Bhuiyan died in police custody in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand. On Saturday afternoon, 53 hours after his death, his family agreed to cremate the body. The family alleges that Aniket was beaten to death by the police of Ramgarh police station. He said that unless action is taken against the policemen, the body will not be cremated. The issue of custodial death was raised in the Jharkhand Assembly on February 23 by the Leader of Opposition and several other MLAs. After this, the Ramgarh district administration has decided to conduct a judicial inquiry as per the instructions of the National Human Rights Commission.
Ramgarh police brought Aniket to the police station on February 21 for questioning in an alleged theft case. He died under suspicious circumstances on 22 February. The police informed the family that Aniket had committed suicide by hanging himself with the noose of a blanket in the presence of the police station.
Family’s allegation – Aniket was tortured and killed.
On the other hand, the family members say that the police has tortured and killed Aniket. Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Assembly Amar Kumar Bauri, Hazaribagh MP Jayant Sinha, Giridih MP Chandra Prakash Chaudhary also reached Aniket’s house. He had put the police in the dock and demanded action against the culprits along with giving appropriate compensation to the family members.
After this the family members agreed to the final decision
On Saturday, the district administration officials convinced the family members to agree to the last rites of the body. The administration has written to the family to give Rs 30,000 in cash for the last rites and to start the process of compensation of Rs 15 lakh as per government rules, to give 5 decimal land, ration card, job as per merit to the dependents of the deceased and pension to one dependent. The matter has been said.
