‘Jalebi teri, Haryana mera’: ‘Sweet’ turns of events in election results
NEW DELHI: The intricate coils of jalebis unfolded their sweetness for BJP as its members took happy bites as Haryana poll results trickled in on Tuesday, a sweet payback to Rahul Gandhi’s mention of “jalebis” in one of his campaign speeches to attack central govt policies.
The party was on its way to a third consecutive victory in Haryana, contrary to predictions of many pollsters.
“Jalebi tera, Haryana mera”, “Jalebi Ready Hai?” trended on social media as netizens, including BJP supporters, shared the jibe against Rahul with memes. Till evening, jalebi was among the top two trends on X with over 59.4k posts.
Celebrations moved from Congress office to that of the BJP around noon as the trends changed with each round of votes counted. In a post on X, around 8:40 am, the Haryana Congress had said, “Ram Ram Haryana. Jalebi Diwas ke Shubhakaamanaaye.”
At a rally in Haryana’s Gohana, Rahul, showing a box of jalebis from Mat hu Ram Halwai, had suggested exporting it to countries like Japan and the US. He had claimed that this could create 20,000 to 50,000 jobs in Mathu Ram’s factory and alleged that traders like Mathu Ram had suffered under the BJP-led central govt’s demonetisation and GST policies.
BJP members had hit out at Gandhi for his remarks, with Ravi Shankar Prasad accusing the Congress member of not doing his homework and lacking understanding.
This not for the first time that the Gohana jalebi has found mention in a political speech. Ahead of Lok Sabha polls, PM Narendra Modi had attacked the INDIA bloc, of which Congress is a part, saying its proposal for five PMs in five years was akin to the jalebi formula and questioning, “Is the prime minister’s post our Mathu Ram ki jalebi?”
