Invited to birthday, stripped, urinated upon: Dalit boy from UP dies by suicide
A 17-year-old Dalit boy in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti died by suicide after allegedly enduring a series of horrific acts of violence and humiliation, including being assaulted, stripped, and urinated upon during a birthday celebration.
According to the teen’s family, he was invited to a birthday party of a local on the night of December 20. During the celebrations, he was stripped, brutally beaten, and urinated upon by four individuals who also allegedly recorded the act on their phone.
The accused later threatened to make the video viral. The boy pleaded with the alleged accused to delete the video, but they humiliated him further, forcing him to lick his spit, the family alleged.
Traumatised, the young boy returned home, shared the incident with his parents, and then ended his life by hanging himself.
The grieving family took the body to a nearby police station, demanding immediate action. However, they allege that the authorities initially failed to register a case or take any action.
The family then carried the boy’s body to the Superintendent of Police (SP) office and staged a sit-in protest. It was only after hours of agitation that the police registered a case and assured them of action, they said.
The victim’s mother accused the police of corruption, alleging that they were shielding the accused by not acting promptly. Meanwhile, the boy’s uncle said that the motive behind the assault remained unclear, but he suspected prior animosity.
Circle Officer (CO) Pradeep Kumar Tripathi confirmed that a case has been registered based on the family’s complaint. The victim’s body has been sent for postmortem, and an investigation is underway.
“We will ensure strict action against the culprits,” Tripathi assured.
