IIT-B condoles death of Dalit student, orders probe News Jani
Mumbai: IIT-Bombay on Monday condoled the suicide death of B.Tech. Darshan Solanki, a first-year Dalit student, called it “a great loss to the family and the IITB community.
In its first response, IIT-B said: “It is unfortunate that despite the efforts of the institute and the students’ guardians to help our students, such a loss could not be prevented. An inquiry into the incident has been ordered. The committee has been formed.
IIT-B organized a condolence meeting and observed a two-minute silence in memory of the deceased, a spokesperson said.
In a shocking incident, 18-year-old Solanki jumped to his death from the 7th floor of his hostel building in the Powai campus on Sunday afternoon after his first semester exams of chemical engineering course a day earlier.
According to some reports, Solanki allegedly ignored the warning shouts of other fellow students who saw him just before he fell to his death.
“Although we cannot change what has already happened, we will increase our efforts to prevent such incidents in the future. We pray that their families find strength to bear this trauma. Insti Tute is with his family at this difficult time. We express our deepest condolences on the tragic loss of Darshan’s life,” IIT-B said.
Earlier on Monday, a student group, Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle-IITB, took to the IIT-B Powai campus to address their concerns about the prevailing discrimination against students belonging to certain categories. Various shortcomings were pointed out by the side. etc., and attempted redress.
