Five-year-old Dalit boy flogged for touching pitcher
Ahmedabad: Three men allegedly flogged a thirsty five-year-old boy from a scheduled caste (SC) community with a stick for touching a pitcher reserved for others in Deesa taluka of Banaskantha on Tuesday.
According to an FIR filed with Bhildi police, Kursi Valmiki, a resident of Rampura village in Deesa taluka, was playing near his house in Deesa when he felt thirsty. He was trying to drink water from the pitcher kept nearby when he was beaten up by the men with a stick. The boy lives with his parents and siblings and is yet to enrol in a school.
The town had recorded a maximum temperature of 44°C on Tuesday.
Kursi’s father Fula Valmiki, an autorickshaw driver, said in his FIR that the boy had a feast near his village and was playing after that. Since he was thirsty, he decided to drink some water from the pitcher kept at the shop of a man named Balwant Thakor.
When Balwant saw Kursi trying to have water, he lunged at the kid and began flogging him with a stick while hurling caste-based slurs for “polluting the water”. Writhing in pain, the child ran to his parents and told them what had transpired.
So Fula, his wife Ratan, his uncle Jayanti, his brother Bharat and cousin Ashok went to Balwant’s house to confront him. Fula said that Balwant and his two sons Bharat and Devchand began abusing them and hurled slurs against the Valmiki community.
When they objected to the abusive words, Balwant and his two sons attacked Fula and his family members.
Fula told TOI that Kursi was admitted to Deesa Civil hospital on Tuesday and was discharged after primary treatment. He said that the boy cannot lie on his back due to the injuries.
Bhildi police registered a case of causing hurt, using abusive words, criminal intimidation and abetment under IPC along with charges of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
