First state-run transgender clinic comes up in Osmania
HYDERABAD: In a first, a government hospital in Hyderabad will have an exclusive clinic for transgender persons to cater to their health and medical services. The clinic was inaugurated by home minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali at Osmania General Hospital on Wednesday.
This will be the only government clinic in the city for transgender persons. The clinic will operate weekly once on Wednesdays and slowly increase to more days. It is located on the general OPD floor.
Doctors said transgender patients can use it for routine medical check-up but also for getting access to specific medical services during gender affirming surgeries, hormonal therapies and other related procedures.
The clinic will also allow them to get gender identity dysphoria certificates by interacting with psychiatrists.
“The clinic will help transgender persons by providing them psychiatrist, endocrinologist, general surgeon, plastic surgeon, urologist and gynecologist services. With everything under one roof, it will make access to all health facilities much easier for them,” said Dr Prachi Rathor, a transgender doctor at OGH.
Dr Prachi and Dr Ruth, who are the first transgender doctors in the state, will be managing the clinic as medical officers. Previously, MGM Hospital in Warangal also had a clinic dedicated to transgender persons which was set up in 2022.
