New Delhi: Congress has always been striving for women leadership in politics. The national executive meeting of Shakti Abhiyan-Indira Fellowship, which was started by Congress to advance women power in politics in the country, is going on in Delhi. On the first day of this, Rahul Gandhi reached Jawahar Bhawan to participate in it, where he had an in-depth discussion with women leaders from across the country. These women came from 21 states and all these participants were the best performing women in their respective fields, who expressed their commitment to face the deep challenges of patriarchy faced by women at the grassroots level.
It is worth mentioning that Shakti Abhiyan, run by Indira Fellowship, is a national initiative, which aims to ensure equal representation of women in Indian politics. This movement empowers the best performing women of rural and urban communities to contest elections, take up leadership roles and challenge the deep patriarchal norms in local and national governance.
‘Our fight is not just for power’
Addressing the women on the first day of the event, Rahul Gandhi said that today the struggle in politics is not just against the traditional opposition parties, but is a broader ideological battle. Rahul said that today our fight in politics is not just for power, but also for representation, both of these are two sides of the same coin. He inspired women to reject symbolic positions and fight for meaningful influential positions.
‘… rather fight for your rights’
Rahul said that women should understand that they should not accept only symbolic amounts or positions, but fight for their rights, which they deserve. In this two-day event, the participants shared their ground experiences and discussed the challenges of social resistance, lack of resources and patriarchy in the political structure.
What is the purpose of Shakti Abhiyan?
It is worth noting that the main demands of Shakti Abhiyan are – equal political participation, in which their participation in elected offices at all levels should be ensured at 50 percent. Policy reforms should be made for this. Financial and administrative support for women leaders, including special resources and training programs to overcome systemic barriers faced by women, safety and dignity of women in public life, protection of women leaders from harassment, violence and intimidation while in office, recognition of women leadership in policy-making, including efforts to include women’s voices in policy making on issues affecting marginalized communities.
