Diversion of funds: Dalit organisation stages protest
Mangaluru: Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (Prof B Krishnappa bana) staged a protest on Monday opposing the diversion of SCSP/TSP funds for the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to implement guarantee schemes.
Samiti members staged a protest by beating ‘tamate’, singing revolutionary songs and raising slogans against the govt in front of Mini Vidhana Soudha in the city.
Samiti members demanded that the order to divert SCSP/TSP funds for the guarantee scheme’s implementation should be withdrawn immediately. “A task force should be constituted to monitor the allocation of funds and to check its misuse. Using the SCSP/TSP funds, free education should be imparted from primary to higher education for the students from SC/ST communities. Financial assistance should be given for the construction of houses and land should be allotted for the poor landless from the community,” members demanded.
The number of beneficiaries to be selected for the self-employment scheme of the Dr BR Ambedkar Corporation should be increased and the deputy commissioner should be given power to finalise the list of beneficiaries in each district, they demanded.
Samiti state convener M Devadas accused Siddaramaiah govt of diverting crores of rupees under SCSP/TSP for the guarantee schemes. “It is a conspiracy against the Dalits in the state,” he said.
Samiti district convener Raghu K Ekkar said that the Dalit community strived to ensure that a communal govt should not come back to power in the state. However, the Congress has done injustice to the community, he said.
“The lives of one crore SC/ST population in the state are still not prosperous as the govts have been using the grants meant for the welfare of the communities for other schemes. The BJP and JD(S) also have no moral right to protest now. They too have misused funds in the past meant for SC/ST development schemes for other works,” he added.
