New Delhi: BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya has shared a video of Rahul Gandhi. In this, he claimed that Rahul Gandhi has admitted to attacking BJP MP Pratap Sarangi. This incident is related to the alleged scuffle outside Parliament on 19 December 2024. There were protests between Congress and BJP over a statement by Amit Shah. Congress had objected to Shah’s statement. However, investigation of the video revealed that Rahul Gandhi was not admitting the attack on the BJP MP. He was answering a question asked about the scuffle with Mallikarjun Kharge.
What is the claim in the video?
On 19 December 2024, a scuffle broke out between Congress and BJP MPs outside Parliament. A video of this incident went viral on social media, in which Rahul Gandhi is seen talking to journalists. BJP leaders claimed that Rahul Gandhi has admitted to attacking BJP MP Pratap Sarangi in the video. But fact-check revealed that this claim is false. Rahul Gandhi was talking about the scuffle with Kharge.
Amit Malviya shared the video and wrote that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi admitted to attacking BJP MP Pratap Sarangi on camera, causing serious injuries to him. Criminal charges should be filed against him for this. There is enough evidence, video footage and his own admission to hold Rahul Gandhi guilty. Let the law take its course. Malviya’s post had so far garnered 35,000 views and 1,500 reposts. Several other BJP MPs also shared the video and accused Rahul Gandhi of assault.
The incident took place following a statement by Home Minister Amit Shah. Shah had said that it has become “fashionable” to take the name of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. The Congress had condemned the statement. This led to protests between the two parties outside Parliament, during which a scuffle broke out. BJP MPs alleged that Rahul Gandhi pushed Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, causing injuries to them. In the video, Sarangi can be seen holding his head and later claiming that he was pushed. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also alleged that he suffered a knee injury.
The truth turned out to be something else
However, contrary to the claims of BJP leaders, Rahul Gandhi is not seen admitting to assaulting the BJP MP in the video. He was responding to a journalist’s question about whether Kharge was also pushed. In a clear video shared by PTI, at 18 seconds, journalists can be heard asking, “What happened to you? What happened to Priyanka ji?” One journalist specifically asks, “Kharge ji, was Kharge ji pushed?”
To this, at 22 seconds, Rahul Gandhi replies, “Look, look, yes, it happened, it happened… but pushing does not affect us. This is the entrance to the Parliament House and it is our right to go inside. BJP members are stopping us from going inside.” The same conversation can be heard in videos uploaded by ANI News and NDTV. These videos confirm that Rahul Gandhi was talking about the pushing of Kharge and not admitting to attacking BJP MPs.
Conclusion: The video of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi responding to reporters about the scuffle with Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi has been misrepresented. The claim that Rahul Gandhi admitted to attacking BJP MPs is false.
