Dalit tied to pole over cattle grazing row
HYDERABAD: A Dalit man was tied up to a wooden pole and beaten up by a villager at Shetpalli village in Mancherial’s Kotapalli mandal. Durgam Babu is alleged to have been given this “punishment” by Suram Ram Reddy for letting his two bulls graze on the latter’s premises.
Kotapalli police told TOI on Friday that a case under SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered against Ram Reddy. “An FIR was lodged and the case is under investigation,” a police officer said. No arrests have been made in the case as yet.
A video of Babu tied to the pole had gone viral on social media. Babu claimed Ram Reddy came to his house, held him by his collar and brought him to the latter’s house and thrashed him.
Was threatened with fake case, says victim
He pulled me by my neck with the towel which I had on me,” Babu alleged. “He broke the lock of his house and threatened me that he would file a case against me claiming that I had broken it,” Babu said.
The incident which took place on Thursday created a furore with Dalit organisations demanding that Ram Reddy be punished as per law.
They said Babu’s cattle reportedly fed on some vegetable plants on the premises of Ram Reddy. “This enraged him. He then went to Babu’s house, brought him to his house and tied his hands to the wooden pole,” a member of an organisation said.
Babu was not released until the villagers intervened and brought pressure on Ram Reddy to let go of the man.
