Dalit professor thrashed in Andhra university by right-wing group: Sources
Dr Ch Changaiah, a professor of Sri Venkateswara University in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati, was allegedly thrashed by Bajrang Dal members inside the campus, sources said.
A Dalit professor of Sri Venkateswara University in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati was allegedly beaten up by members of a right-wing group on Wednesday, sources said. Dr Ch Changaiah, professor and dean of the department of electrical engineering, was roughed up allegedly by Bajrang Dal members inside the campus.
Sources said a group of men entered the university premises and started an argument with Dr Changaiah, who is known for raising his voice on social justice and Dalit rights. The argument escalated into a physical altercation, with the group thrashing the professor.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter. A hunt has also been launched to nab the accused.
This is the second such attack in a week on a person from the Dalit community that has come to light. On November 27, a Dalit man was allegedly beaten to death by a local sarpanch and his family members over filling water from a common handpump in Indragarh village of Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district.
According to the police, 27-year-old Narad Jatav, who had come to his maternal aunt’s place in Indragarh, died after being allegedly beaten up by village head Padma Singh Dhakad and his family with sticks and rubber pipes.
