Dalit nurse critical after rape, attack in moving car
Bareilly: A 28-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped and assaulted by her live-in partner and his friend in a moving car before they abandoned her on the Delhi-Lucknow National Highway in Bareilly on Monday night. She sustained multiple injuries and is in critical condition.
The woman, a nurse, had been in a live-in relationship for six years with her partner in Budaun. In her statement to the police, she said her lover, a married man, had been coercing her to get into a physical relationship with his friend but refused his demands.
The duo took her out for a drive, and his friend raped her in the car before they tried to kill her. They first tried to strangle her with a rope, and when she resisted, they struck her on the head multiple times with a liquor bottle. The assault continued as they used a knife and bricks to harm her. They also tried to crush her head with a stone on the highway before leaving, she told the police.
The police said they found the injured woman on the highway. SHOs from three nearby stations initially debated about the jurisdiction in which the assault took place, which delayed the filing of the FIR by several hours. Eventually, Bhojipura police station took up the case based on a complaint filed by the survivor’s sister, who also resides in Budaun.
Highway circle officer Nitin Kumar said, “The woman has been admitted to a hospital in critical condition. We have registered a case against the two men under charges of rape and attempted murder and are searching for them. The accused are from Budaun and will be arrested soon. The woman has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. The woman’s statement will soon be recorded before the magistrate.”
