‘Courtesy meet’: Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren after meeting Kharge, Rahul Gandhi amid political upheaval
NEW DELHI: Accompanied by his wife Kalpana Soren, Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The meeting between the leaders was held at Rahul Gandhi’s residence in Delhi.
After the meeting with Congress leaders, Soren said that it was a courtesy meeting. “I was planning to meet them for a long time. It was a courtesy meeting,” Hemant said while talking to reporters.
When asked if the discussion involved Jharkhand assembly elections, the JMM chief said, “It will happen eventually”.
Soren further assured that everything else is in order, and they will contest the election with full force. He added, “Everything else is fine. We will run the government, and fight election with full strength, blueprint for that will also be prepared soon.”
In a recent political development that has been seen as a blow to Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Champai Soren, a senior leader of the party and former chief minister of Jharkhand, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ranchi on August 30.
Upon joining the BJP, the former JMM stalwart expressed his confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah.
As the current government’s term is set to expire in 2024, Jharkhand is gearing up for elections to the 81-member Legislative assembly later this year.
