Court summons Rahul over Savarkar remarks
Lucknow: A Lucknow court on Friday summoned Rahul Gandhi on Jan 10, 2025 to face trial for promoting enmity and disturbing harmony among people by making derogatory comments on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The court found that prima facie, charges under IPC sections 153(a) (promoting enmity) and 505 (public mischief) were made out against the Congress MP and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha. Additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) Alok Verma passed the order on a criminal complaint filed by lawyer Nripendra Pandey. He alleged that during his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul, at a press conference in Maharashtra’s Akola on Nov 17, 2022, made remarks against Savarkar that spread disharmony.
The court in its order observed, “The material presented demonstrates that Gandhi’s remarks, broadcast nationwide via TV and social media, were intended to spread hatred and enmity, undermining the nation’s unity.”
The ACJM had earlier rejected the complaint on June 14, 2023, but Pandey filed a revision petition before a sessions court. The revisional court in Oct 2024 set aside the order and remanded the matter back to the ACJM court for passing fresh orders. TNN
