Cong seeks govt job for Islam’s widow
Guwahati: Congress has approached chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s office, seeking govt employment for advocate Mridul Islam’s widow.
Islam, who held the position of Assam PCC legal cell secretary, had “died in police action” during a demonstration to the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday regarding Adani and other critical matters. Following Rahul Gandhi’s Friday condolence call to Islam’s wife and promise of family security support, the party launched a Rs 25 lakh collection drive for Islam’s family, while guaranteeing his children’s educational needs.
Assam Pradesh Congress president Bhupen Borah has submitted an official application to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, requesting a govt position for Islam’s spouse. Pradesh Congress general secretary (administration) Ramanna Baruah and general secretary (organisation) Bipul Gogoi delivered the request to the chief minister’s office on Saturday.
AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge previously contacted Islam’s wife Hamida Parbin, who lives in a minority community village in Sontoli, Kamrup district.
“Our Congress leadership, led by Rahul Gandhi Ji and Mallikarjun Kharge Ji, expressed their heartfelt condolences to Mridul Islam’s grieving family. Rahul Ji personally spoke with the family for 5 minutes, while Kharge Ji spent 7 minutes comforting them and pledging Congress’s unwavering support,” Assam PCC announced on Saturday.
APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah said, “The martyrdom of Mridul Islam highlights the lengths to which this regime will go to silence dissent. We will not rest until justice is served for his family and until this oppressive regime is held accountable for its actions.”
Congress condemns BJP govt in Assam for its brazen misuse of state machinery to curb peaceful protests and demands an independent inquiry into the incident,” said Naba Jyoti Talukdar, vice-president and media in-charge, APCC.
