CM Siddu bats for Dalits, tells cops to up conviction rate in Dalit atrocity cases
Bengaluru: Batting for the Dalit community, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has lamented that the performance of Karnataka when it comes to convictions in cases of violence against Dalits is not satisfactory, while calling on the police to set right this ‘disparity’.

He made the comments at the annual conference of senior police officers held in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
“If the victims are to have faith in the system, the quality of investigations into cases of atrocities must improve. A scientifically valid charge sheet should be submitted in all cases,” Siddaramaiah said.
This is not the first time the CM has publicly criticised the police department over their performance with regard to atrocities against Dalits.
Back in September, Siddaramaiah had warned Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) that there would be action against them if charge sheets are not filed in the Prevention of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) Atrocities Act cases within 120 days of the crime.
“Put a complete stop to cases of violence against women and children. Punishment should be increased. Otherwise, the blame will be on the DCPs themselves for this failure,” the CM said.
“It is a bad development that police officers are eager for transfers and are also using their caste for this purpose. Do not do this,” he added Home Minister G Parameshwara, Home Secretary Umashankar, State DGP Alok Mohan, Chief Minister’s Secretary Trilok Chandra, CM’s political Secretaries Govindaraju and Naseer Ahmed were present on the occasion.
