Chitralekha, Dalit woman who battled CPM-led caste oppression, dies.

KANNUR: Chitralekha (48), a prominent Dalit social activist, who fought a lone battle against the atrocious dictum of CPM, passed away on Saturday. She was under treatment for cancer. For a long, Chitralekha vociferously stood against CPM alleging the party’s caste-based persecution.

Chitralekha, a native of Edat, invited the wrath of CPM after she opposed the CITU dictum that didn’t allow her to drive an auto rickshaw for a living. The lone battle also had its perils as assailants put fire on her auto both in 2005 and 2013.

Chitralekha’s protest had garnered national attention. In the 2016 assembly elections, she contested as a BSP candidate in Aruvikkara constituency. The cremation will take place on Sunday morning at Payyambalam.
