The Chhattisgarh legislative assembly on Wednesday witnessed dramatic scenes with disruptions, sloganeering and suspension of opposition MLAs for trooping into the well of the House over the issue of tribal and Dalit youths staging a protest near the state assembly in Raipur demanding action against all those using fake caste certificates to usurp reservation benefits.
The political row sparked when opposition legislators sought a debate on the issue as tribal and Dalit students stripped down their clothes and marched naked towards the Chhattisgarh Assembly on its first day of monsoon session demanding immediate action against fake caste certificate holders in the state.
Raipur Police detained 29 people who were determined to march towards the state assembly. “On checking the mobile phones of the arrested accused, the obscene video made by them naked was also made viral in various social media groups. Police arrested 29 accused and registered crime no. 213/23 Section 146 (violence is used by an unlawful assembly), 147, 353, 332, 294 and 67 (A) of the IT Act have been registered and sent to jail,” police officials said in a statement.
The leader of the opposition Narayane Chandel expressed concern about the situation that forced students to take such drastic measures. He said that the demands of the protesting youths had previously gone unnoticed despite the ultimatum given to the government by the protestors.
The opposition leaders accused the government of negligence and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghael and a thorough investigation into the alleged issuance of fake certificates to people employed with the state government in Chhattisgarh.
