Back to basics: BSP dist panels to have more Dalit members
Lucknow: After the recent drubbing in Lok Sabha polls, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is reconstituting its district level committees with major focus on Dalits — its core vote bank.
This is also keeping in mind the upcoming bypolls on 10 assembly seats in UP which the party has decided to contest.
The party has so far formed new district committees in Prayagraj, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Unnao having Dalit office-bearers outnumbering others. The eight-member committees have vice presidents, general secretaries, secretaries, treasurers, executive members and coordinators for BVF and BAMCEF.
BSP president Mayawati has approved these committees that have most office-bearers from Dalit community (mainly Pasis and Jatavs).
Considering that the party’s ideology covers the ‘bahujans’ comprising the religious minorities, the committees have one Muslim member each.
This comes even as Mayawati had spoken about her disillusionment with Muslims in UP after the Lok Sabha poll disaster where the party not just failed to open its account but also lost its vote share.
The party also wants these committees to coordinate with the non-political outfits associated with the Bahujan movement, like All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF) and Bahujan Volunteer Force (BVF) to increase its base among masses and have a strong cadre in UP.
The BSP plans to put in place a committee in every district before the dates for the bypolls are announced and the party starts campaigning. Meanwhile, Mayawati said BSP will pick candidates for bypolls from the ones associated with the bahujan mission, though winnability will also be the criteria.
