Apollo Tyres Launches Skill Development Program for Transgender Community in Hyderabad

Apollo Tyres has opened a skill development center in Hyderabad’s Auto Nagar area to empower the transgender community with job-ready skills. This pilot program will train 20 transgender individuals in jute bag-making, enhancing their employability and fostering independence. At the center’s inauguration, Apollo Tyres Foundation placed an initial order for 500 jute bags to support the trainees, with potential for future orders to sustain the initiative.

The training is structured into two groups of 10 participants each, with a three-month curriculum that combines hands-on learning and practical application. Each participant will receive a stipend throughout the program to assist with financial needs.

The facility is equipped with five jute bag-making machines, along with necessary materials and tools, ensuring that participants can produce market-ready products. An instructor will provide personalized guidance, tailored to the needs of each trainee.

Rachna, a transgender trainer and advocate, expressed optimism about the program’s impact, emphasizing that comprehensive skills training is key to accessing rights and opportunities. With a background in healthcare, Rachna believes that community-focused training has the power to drive lasting change with continued support.

Apollo Tyres Foundation has also trained transgender sex workers as peer educators, equipping them with healthcare skills to engage with the trucking community. In the current fiscal year, the foundation has worked with 54 transgender peer educators across 20 transport hubs in India, reaching 21,500 truck drivers with information on HIV/AIDS. As part of its commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the foundation has integrated transgender community members into various projects to promote inclusivity.
