Amidst the plight of Hindus in Pakistan, Dalit daughter Krishna Kumari created history by becoming a Senator.
There are 22,10,566 people of the minority Hindu community in Pakistan. This is 1.18 percent of the total population of Pakistan. The majority of the Hindu population in Pakistan is poor and their representation in the institutions of the country is also very less. But if someone from this small population succeeds in rising above the poverty of the country and doing something, then it becomes a historical moment for Pakistan. Krishna Kumari Kolhi, a resident of Thar in the Muslim-dominated Sindh province of Pakistan, did something similar. In fact, she has become the first Hindu-Dalit woman to be elected as a Senator (Rajya Sabha MP) in Pakistan.

45-year-old Kolhi has been elected from Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s party Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). According to Pakistan’s ‘The Dawn’, Krishna has won from the seat of Sindh province which was reserved for women. Krishna has defeated a Maulana associated with the Taliban in the election.
Who is Krishna Kumari Kolhi?
Krishna’s election to the Senate is considered a turning point for the rights of Pakistani women and minorities. Kolhi lives in the isolated Nagarparkar district of Thar in Sindh province. Krishna’s father was a farmer, who was born in a low-income family. Born in 1979, Krishna was married at the age of sixteen. At that time Krishna was in the ninth grade. However, Krishna continued her education even after marriage and in 2013 she obtained a postgraduate degree in sociology from Sindh University.
This is how Krishna became a senator
She joined the PPP as an activist along with her brother. Kolhi also raised her voice for the rights of the marginalized people in Thar. Krishna belongs to a family of freedom fighters. Let us tell you that according to the provisional results, Pakistan’s ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s party PML-N won 15 seats in the Senate. With this victory, it emerged as the largest party in the upper house of Parliament. Everything is like a dream for Krishna Kumari
Krishna Kumari says that everything is like a dream for her. She never thought that she would ever be elected as a senator. She still cannot believe it. Krishna Kohli said that after getting education, she thought that she would get a good job and she would be able to serve her community, but she never thought that she would become a senator.
Hindu women have been Lok Sabha MPs before
Rita Ishwar Lal is the first female Hindu member of Pakistan’s National Assembly (Lok Sabha MP). She was elected in 2013 from Sindh’s NA-319 seat, which was reserved for women. Ratna Bhagwan Das Chawla was Pakistan’s first female Hindu senator from 2006 to 2012; however, she was not a Dalit Hindu. The PPP also promoted her to the post of senator.
