Aiman Kalia on playing Yash in Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin; says ‘Being an actor allows you to explore different sides of yourself’

Aiman Kalia, who plays Yash in Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin, sees acting as a medium to explore a wide range of human emotions and experiences.

“Being an actor comes with the advantage of playing a variety of characters. You can observe people, imitate them, and bring those characters to life on screen. I love that about acting. It’s like living different lives through different roles. When people connect with a character you’ve portrayed, it feels rewarding. Acting allows you to explore different reactions in different situations, which makes it fascinating.”

His portrayal of a transgender character in the short film Kaina, which won Best Short Film at the Los Angeles Film Festival, was an eye-opening experience. “Before taking on the role, I didn’t know much about transgender life. However, after playing the character, I gained a deeper understanding of their challenges, especially in India. It made me realize how tough their lives are, and I respect them even more now. Their strength is inspiring, and their stories deserve to be heard.”

Aiman has also closely followed performances of transgender characters in mainstream cinema. “Yes, I’ve watched those films and shows, and I found Sushmita Sen’s performance in Taali particularly impactful. It left a strong impression on me.”

Despite being a newcomer, Aiman was eager to take on a challenging role. “I wasn’t apprehensive at all. I was excited to play a transgender character because it was so different from my own reality. When you step into a role, your mindset shifts, and you start behaving like the character. I even observed people’s reactions while staying in character. It was an insightful experience. I have also learned to drape a saree. Initially, the costume designer helped me, but over time, I became more confident with it.”

On whether he consulted anyone before accepting the role, he said, “No, I just focused on doing justice to the character. It turned out to be a very fulfilling experience.”

Aiman Kalia continues to take on diverse roles, and his portrayal of Yash in Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin showcases his commitment to his craft.
