Thiruvananthapuram: According to Higher Education and Social Justice Minister R. Bindu, special arrangements will be made at popular tourist locations throughout the State to showcase the artistic abilities of members of the transgender community, The Hindu reported.
According to the Minister, the project will also guarantee compensation for transsexual people. On October 15, 2022, she spoke at the opening of Varnapakittu, the State Transgender Art and Cultural Festival put on by the Social Justice Department in Thiruvananthapuram.
The “Mazhavillu” system, designed by the State to guarantee the complete growth of the transgender population, has also received positive feedback.
In an effort to integrate transgender people into society, the Higher Education administration has also agreed to grant transgender students in higher education institutions a two percent reservation.
The Minister for General Education, V. Sivankutty, presided over the fest’s opening ceremony and declared that the State government’s stated policy is to ensure social justice for the transgender population. The fest will end on Sunday.
The “hijras,” or those who were born male but are now considered to be a member of India’s “third gender,” live on the periphery of society and are both loved and feared by some Hindus who think they have the power to bless or curse. Even though they have a unique place in society, their position in the employment sphere or as artists remains stigmatised for them.
