Kerala Police arrests SDPI leader in Dalit activist assault case
An SDPI district secretary, MK Safeer, was arrested by the Kerala Police for allegedly being a key accused in the assault case of a Dalit activist that took place on June 23. Police booked him under multiple sections of the IPC and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Kerala Police, on Tuesday, July 5, arrested a Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) district secretary for allegedly being involved in the assault of a Dalit activist in Kozhikode district’s Balussery area.
The Kozhikode Rural police said that the arrested leader, MK Safeer, was allegedly a key accused in the crime.
A Dalit activist of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the ruling CPI(M), was allegedly attacked by SDPI and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) workers on June 23. They assaulted him since they suspected him of destroying their party’s flex boards and banners.
After a video of the assault went viral on social media, Kerala Police arrested nine people initially. The video, which went viral on social media, shows the victim being brutally beaten up by a group of people.
Police booked the accused under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and various provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
