Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always been taking decisions that surprise everyone. He has once again stunned the political pundits by announcing the name of Draupadi Murmu as the NDA candidate for the post of President. For the past many years, ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ has been the favorite motto of BJP and Modiji. Following the same path of development for all, he has once again proved that he has the courage to do what he has done before by presenting Draupadi Murmu, the tribal leader of Orissa and former Governor of Jharkhand, as the NDA’s presidential candidate. Nobody dared to do it.
There are many implications hidden in the BJP’s politics of making Murmu the President. The Lokniti-CSDS survey revealed that 72 percent of tribals exercised their franchise in the 2019 elections, which was much higher than the national average of 62%. It can be deduced that the tribal community has now become politically aware and is actively showing its participation in electoral politics.
The BJP has been getting the benefit of this political fervor that has emerged in this community and continues to get it, that is why it was only after seriously deliberating on Murmu’s tribal identity that the Bharatiya Janata Party took his name forward. The party has been able to rapidly increase its mass base among all classes, social groups and communities in an effective manner by following its steps. The opponents are surprised to the extent that the BJP and Modi are taking this rapid lead.
After Modi took over the power, BJP has made continuous efforts to advance the marginalized backward classes in the society like OBCs, Dalits, women and tribals. As a result of these efforts, these groups have come with the ideology of BJP to regain their lost self-respect, pride and dignity. The BJP has given the country a Muslim in Kalam and a Dalit President like Kovind. And the party has now made full preparations to get a tribal poor woman to occupy the post of President.
This tremendous social engineering will help the BJP to establish itself as a representative of the weaker and deprived sections sitting at the lowest rung of the society on one hand and on the other hand will deepen the party’s penetration in the upper-class-elite society at the ideological level as well. Instead of presenting himself as the Prime Minister of the country, Prime Minister with the spirit of patriotism and national development, Narendra Modi has managed to tilt this complicated equation of the poor and the elite in his favor.
Yesterday, when NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu arrived to file her nomination, she was accompanied by Prime Minister Modi as a proposer and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh as a seconder, as well as Home Minister Amit Shah. This behavior of BJP gives a message to the entire society that how serious is BJP and Modi for everyone’s development. Draupadi Murmu comes from the Santhal tribal society and this is the first time after 74 years of India’s independence, when the ruling coalition has made a tribal as a candidate for the presidency.
Apart from being a tribal leader, she is also a woman coming from a poor family who has traveled through her struggle in the face of very difficult circumstances. This choice of the BJP for this glorified President’s chair will be a living proof that the BJP has democratized the institutions that have been symbols of monarchy by opening the doors of Rashtrapati Bhavan to minorities, women, Dalits, the downtrodden and the poor. The term of current President Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24. Elections for the upcoming presidential election are to be held on July 18. Nominations for this can be filled by June 29 and the announcement of Draupadi Murmu’s election as the fifteenth President of India will be made by July 21.
