UP: Dalit woman was raped, compromise was made under the pressure of Panchayat, marriage broke when the video of brutality reached the husband

It is alleged that the accused sent the video of the rape to the victim’s fiancé, due to which the marriage of the Dalit woman broke.
Meerut: In August 2023, a 21-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by an upper caste man. After this, a forced compromise was made in the Panchayat and she was given Rs 2.5 lakh to keep quiet. But her suffering did not end here.
After this horrific incident, the victim’s family moved away from their village to avoid harassment and social pressure. They fixed the woman’s marriage at a faraway place, but the accused got information about it. It is alleged that he sent the video of the rape to the victim’s fiancé, due to which the marriage broke.
After this, the situation got worse. The accused’s family started demanding back the money given. Unable to bear the constant threats and pressure, the victim’s father approached Hapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kunwar Gyananjay Singh. Following this, an FIR was lodged on Thursday, almost two years later.
Narrating his ordeal, the victim’s father said, “After what happened to my daughter, we were forcibly made to settle the matter for Rs 2.5 lakh in the panchayat. We left the village to start a new life. But when I fixed my daughter’s marriage, the accused sent her obscene video to her fiancé, which broke the marriage. What do we do now?”
The victim’s mother was also manhandled by the accused’s family. “They came to us to ask for the money back and started harassing us. When my wife protested, they beat her up and tore her clothes,” the father told the police.
Hafizpur station house officer (SHO) Ashish Kumar said, “Earlier this matter did not come to our notice. Now that the complaint has been lodged, an FIR has been registered against five accused under sections 376 (rape), 354 (assault or use of force on woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.” The SHO said, “Teams have been formed to investigate the case and arrests will be made soon.”
