Dalit man’s murder sparks protests, shutdown in Balotra
Jaisalmer: The daylight murder of Dalit man, Vishnaram Meghwal on Tuesday, triggered widespread protests in Balotra, culminating in a town-wide shut down on Thursday. Community members marched from the mortuary to the collectorate, burning tyres near the first railway underpass and demanding swift justice.
History-sheeter Harshdan Charan allegedly stabbed Meghwal, sparking outrage among residents. The victim’s family and supporters staged a three-day sit-in outside Nahata Hospital’s mortuary, expressing frustration over police inaction and the accused’s continued freedom. Memorandums were submitted to the chief minister and Prime Minister, seeking the accused’s arrest and adequate compensation for the family.
Despite assurances from district collector Sushil Kumar Yadav and SP Kundan Kanwaria, negotiations faltered as the accused remained at large. Kanwaria said that the accused, with over a dozen criminal cases, evaded arrest due to delayed reporting. Police continue searching through CCTV footage and potential hideouts while urging peaceful protests.
